Revolutionizing Game Development: Unity’s AI Advancements with Unity Muse and Unity Sentis

AI has already begun to be applied in areas where it is necessary to analyze and generate content. In particular, artificial intelligence is implemented in game and app development. AI is getting popular primarily due to its ability to significantly speed up and facilitate the content development process. Instead of spending several hours manually creating graphics for games and applications, you can use AI to generate the necessary components on its own simply. Then the developer will make their edits. Therefore, it is not surprising that the number of companies using AI is growing. According to  Forbes Advisor, by 2027 the artificial intelligence market will be estimated at 407 billion USD. And 64% of enterprises believe that artificial intelligence will increase their productivity. Unity, one of the most famous app manufacturers for portable gadgets, is among the companies that are already gradually introducing AI into their work.  In this article, we will take a detailed look and analyze the new artificial intelligence developments from Unity and what they mean for the development of XR applications. Leveraging Unity AI for App Development Unity has been using AI for a few years now, but, firstly, it was mostly for marketing and non-game content to a wider audience. Like, for example, Luna, a platform that aims to improve the advertising strategy of brands. Or Supersonic which is a stand-alone platform that automates and accelerates game advertising. Secondly, artificial intelligence and neural networks for gaming have previously been created only for developers who have special qualifications for working with applications. Like, for example, ML agents, which allow you not to code the behavior of digital elements, because these elements themselves (smart agents) are independently learning the algorithms of behavior in the environment. For example, in a game from Unity, you can hone the behavior of a digital corgi that runs after a stick. Or the behavior of racing cars, as in this video. Which, in our case, is our racetracks. The agents are the game objects we want to train. So, that they can accomplish a goal, such as driving without colliding with the track walls. And, finally — our academy, which collects all observations, done by our agents and trains them”, said Unity’s official video. In March 2023, Unity announced their own AI game and application development features. Then there was the first presentation of an ecosystem with artificial intelligence, which operates according to the principle of many AI generators, such as Midjourney and ChatGPT. A few days ago, new AI tools for developing games and applications were announced: Unity Muse and Unity Sentis, which we will discuss in more detail below.  Unity Muse: Empowering AI Creativity Unity Muse is the newest platform with artificial intelligence, the main purpose of which is to accelerate the creation of applications with 3D graphics. In particular, the option of this platform includes such basic functions as: automatic creation of animated characters and digital doubles; creation of the movements of the animated model — for example, jumps or backflips; creating a texture for the environment; addition to ready-made 3D models — for example, the video shows how you can highlight the roof area on the digital model of the house, enter a prompt and select several options for a red roof from the database. “The Muse platform provides quick access to detailed information from the documentation and can also generate 2D sprites and 3D animations. This allows developers to quickly get the resources they need to create prototypes or new experiences without waiting for final versions of models and sprites. With Muse chat, developers can effectively communicate with other team members and get the help they need during development”, said Qualium Systems Unity tech lead Arcueid D’athemon. The main difference between Unity Muse and ML agents is ease of use. The newest platform looks like a chat with a neural network and the principle of operation resembles the sensational ChatGPT. As mentioned above, the user enters the required prompt to generate the 3D content required for the application. Harness the Power of Unity Sentis AI Unity Sentis is a cross-platform tool that integrates AI into Unity applications. According to Unity’s official announcement, Sentis enables in-app digital models to work flawlessly on all operating systems, browsers, and devices that support Unity, from smartphones and tablets to game consoles and XR glasses. Thus, applications with built-in AI models work more efficiently due to the fact that data is processed in real-time. However, according to Arcueid D’athemon, Unity tech lead at Qualium Systems, the range of  Sentis options is wider, and the platform can also generate voice acting and animation for a character. “It opens up opportunities to quickly create dynamically generated actions in the application that will depend on the environment or interaction with the user. With Sentis, developers can effectively create realistic character movements and high-quality voice acting that enriches the user experience”, said Arcueid D’athemon. In the end, the combination of the input of the own neural network can change the process of the application use. For example, the user can directly interact with an NPC, while would respond to him with lines that are not pre-recorded. It enhances the immersive experience of gameplay, using the example of a virtual AI character named Orb. Unity’s interest in AI in app development is evident with recent innovations such as Unity Muse and Unity Sentis. The first tool allows developers to quickly and efficiently create 3D models of game and non-game characters, environments, and textures. Elevating Spatial Computing. Examining Technological Feats of Apple Vision Pro, Magic Leap, Meta Quest Pro, and Microsoft HoloLens

Immersive technologies are gradually becoming common in various business areas. Mixed and augmented reality, spatial computing, etc., allow you to automate processes at enterprises, as well as facilitate remote work. These opportunities have already attracted many IT companies, such as Apple, Meta, and Microsoft. According to Mordor Intelligence, the value of the augmented reality market will grow from 105.58 to 472.39 billion dollars in 2023–2028. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at the specifications of the Apple Vision Pro, Magic Leap, Meta Quest Pro, and Microsoft HoloLens. We will also examine the advantages and disadvantages of these devices and share the experience of our specialists. Taking a Closer Look at Microsoft HoloLens 2 Let’s start with Microsoft Hololens 2, MR glasses for business. HoloLens 2 is a Microsoft device, which was created mainly for work in such fields as manufacturing, medicine, construction, architecture, design, etc. The main areas of use of Microsoft HoloLens 2 include MR training, development of models and digital twins, improvement of the safety of the working environment at factories, etc. The official release date of the glasses is February 24, 2019. Microsoft HoloLens 2 looks like glasses with two transparent lenses digital content is superimposed on. The weight of these glasses is 566 grams. This device supports mixed reality, a technology that combines virtual reality with the real world and provides more opportunities to interact with a digital object. That is, they project digital 3D objects onto the real world and allow a user to digitize real objects. Eye movements are tracked using infrared cameras, while four built-in cameras monitor head movements. Also, the glasses themselves are able to scan the location to improve the placement of digital content with the help of an internal accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer. Microsoft HoloLens 2 works on the Windows 10 operating system, specially adapted for the glasses. The processor for HoloLens 2 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 chip, a common chip model among a good deal of VR/AR glasses. The Microsoft HoloLens 2 battery can withstand 2–3 hours of active work. Breaking Barriers with Magic Leap 2 These mixed-reality glasses were released in September 2022 and are considered to be one of the main competitors of Microsoft HoloLens 2. Magic Leap 2, for example, is both more powerful and lighter than Microsoft’s product, as it has an AMD Zen 2 quad-core processor and an RDNA 2 video card. The weight of Magic Leap 2 is only 260 grams. A glasses user can thus perform tasks faster and more efficiently with greater comfort while wearing Magic Leap 2, which even outwardly resembles sunglasses in design. The device is designed for work in various fields: construction, medicine, mechanical engineering, architecture, and design, etc. Magic Leap 2 has several areas of use in business: remote collaboration, remote assistance, training, and visualization of models for presentation. This device includes an option to darken the space so that the user can see more details of the digital model. Magic Leap 2, like Microsoft’s HoloLens 2, includes hand and eye tracking as well as voice input. But unlike Microsoft’s device, they also come bundled with controllers, each having a camera that makes it easier to track movements and objects. The option of using a virtual keyboard is also available. The kit also comes with a separate connected processor that a user wears on the hip. These glasses have Magic Leap OS based on Android. Meta Quest Pro: Redefining MR Experience The latest MR headset by Meta, introduced in October 2022, has a wider range of functions. Given the company’s core policy, these glasses were created for the metaverse, a fully immersive environment. However, working with Meta Quest Pro also involves the use of augmented and mixed reality. Unlike Hololens 2 and Magic Leap 2, Meta Quest Pro is designed as virtual reality glasses — instead of transparent lenses, the device uses displays and cameras. Speaking about work in MR, Meta Quest Pro offers several options: Remote communication with colleagues. It is available through both video conferences and with the help of digital avatars. Several employees can be in the digital space at the same time, both as an avatar and through video. Bringing your laptop or PC into the digital space is one of Quest Pro’s best-known features. Instead of being limited to one screen of the device, you can wear MR glasses and put three additional large screens on the laptop. In addition, Meta Quest Pro is actively used for entertainment. For example, you can play various MR games in them. For instance, I Expect You To Die uses digital traps to turn the living room into a quest room. Or you can watch movies and YouTube videos on a large digital screen in mixed reality. The Quest Pro can hold a charge for one to three hours. The processor of Meta Quest Pro is Snapdragon XR2+, which has more power than other models of VR glasses and is 50% more powerful than Quest 2. The VR glasses come with two controllers and a charger. Unlike previous Meta (Oculus) models, the battery is located in the back of the device, which creates an even load on the user’s head. In general, the weight of the glasses is 720 grams. XR is a catch-all term that includes Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR), and it’s totally changing how we experience and interact with the world. Right now, it’s taking the art and theater worlds by storm, injecting a fresh and immersive twist into these time-honored forms of human expression. The Art World Meets XR Just like two buddies hanging out, art and technology have always shared a close bond. Technology consistently unlocks new doors for creativity and artistic expression. Today, XR is reimagining how we enjoy art. Galleries and museums are using XR to put together exhibits that give us an interactive, deep-dive into the art world like we’ve never seen before. Meanwhile, virtual theater pioneers like the National Theatre are playing around with VR to deliver boundary-pushing, immersive performances straight to your living room. With XR, theater isn’t just exploring new frontiers of creativity; it’s also breaking down barriers to accessibility. Virtual performances can bring the magic of live theater to those who might not have the opportunity to experience it otherwise, such as people living in remote locations or those with mobility issues. The Ups and Downs of XR in Art and Theater There’s a lot to love about using XR in art and theater. It’s not just about crafting new and immersive experiences; it’s about tearing down the walls of the traditional venues and formats and reaching out to more people. With XR, art and theater become more inclusive and accessible to all. That being said, it’s not all smooth sailing.
